Occupational Therapy Assistant
The Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Sanford-Brown College-Hazelwood (SBC) is designed to prepare students to plan and implement comprehensive treatment programs under the supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist. Students participate in Assessment techniques, program planning and treatment procedures for individuals with a variety of disabling conditions. The core curriculum is structured to include a lecture component, an laboratory component, and a clinical component. The final externship portion of the curriculum consists of supervised experiences in a clinical environment, which requires competencies, logs, and evaluations completed by the student. At the conclusion of the program, graduates who have diligently attended class and their externship, studied, and practiced their skills should have the skills to seek entry-level employment as occupation therapy assistants. The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT) offers certification for occupational therapy assistants (COTA). Since SBC’s program is programmatically accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., graduates are eligible to sit for the NBCOT certification exam. Passage of the NBCOT certification exam is required in Missouri, as well as in several other states, for state licensure, which may be required to practice as an occupational therapy assistant in the state. Certification requirements for taking and passing the NBCOT exam are not controlled by SBC and are subject to change without notice. SBC cannot guarantee that graduates will be eligible to take the certification exam at all or at any specific time, regardless of their eligibility status upon enrollment
