Medical Lab Technician Program
Students can learn to conduct tests on blood, tissue and other specimens. The results of these tests are then used in the diagnosis and treatment of clinical patients' conditions. Students can also have responsibilities for lab quality control, including preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment or the outsourcing of that repair. The Medical Lab Technician program is designed to prepare the students to enter into their profession in a variety of entry level positions; under the supervisor of physicians in a Doctors Office, lab managers or medical or clinical lab technologists in Hospitals or independent Laboratories. Graduates of SBI’s Medical Laboratory Technician program are eligible for and encouraged to take the Medical Laboratory Technician certification exam offered by American Medical Technologists (AMT) upon graduation. This credential is a nationally recognized voluntary certification that could enhance employment opportunities. The American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) also offers a certification exam, however, graduates of SBI’s Medical Laboratory Technician program are not eligible to take this exam because only graduates of programs accredited by National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) are eligible for the exam, and SBI cannot guarantee that the program will be accredited by NACCLS or that students will be eligible to take the ASCP certification exam, at all or at any specific time.
